Ovilus, Spirit Box and ITC Apps: What Is the Difference?
These tools get lumped together in casual conversation, and it's easy to see why — they share a broad category and a similar purpose. But the mechanisms underneath are genuinely different, and the differences affect how each one should be evaluated.
Spirit boxes
A spirit box, sometimes called a ghost box, rapidly scans across radio frequencies, producing a continuous stream of station fragments, static, and noise. There's no vocabulary and no stored word list — any language that comes through is assembled, or perceived to be assembled, from real broadcast audio caught mid-scan. Output is constant by design, which is part of what makes isolating a meaningful moment from ordinary radio interference difficult.
The Ovilus and similar environmental-to-vocabulary devices
The Ovilus is a dedicated hardware device that uses onboard environmental sensors — typically electromagnetic field and temperature readings — to select words from a built-in dictionary. Unlike a spirit box, it isn't pulling from live radio; it has an actual stored vocabulary and a defined process for selecting from it based on sensor input. It's one of the earliest and best-known examples of connecting environmental readings to language rather than just reporting a raw measurement.
Random-word paranormal apps
A large category of smartphone apps generate words on a timer, a shake gesture, or a simple trigger, selecting from a pool without any fixed, checkable relationship between input and output. These can be built and published quickly, which is part of why they're common. The tradeoff is that a random pool can't be evaluated the way a fixed system can — there's no map to compare a result against.
Magnetometer-driven, fixed-mapping apps
A smaller category — including Meridian Loom — uses a phone's built-in sensors, most commonly the magnetometer, to navigate a fixed, predetermined vocabulary map rather than randomly selecting from a pool. The mechanism is closer in spirit to the Ovilus than to a spirit box or a random-word app: environmental input determines language, through a defined and repeatable process. The distinguishing feature of this category is that the map itself doesn't change, which means the relationship between a given reading and a given word can, in principle, be checked.
EVP, for comparison
Electronic voice phenomena work differently from all of the above. There's no live output at all — EVP is audio recorded during a session and reviewed afterward for voices or sounds not noticed at the time. It's included here because it's frequently grouped with these other methods in general conversation about ITC, even though its process is closer to documentation than to real-time interaction.
Why the distinction matters
None of these methods can establish what caused a given reading, and none of them prove a paranormal cause over a mundane one. What differs between them is how transparent the process is, how repeatable it is, and how much of a session can be reviewed and compared after the fact rather than taken on faith in the moment.
